Pride of a Job Well Done

For 30 years, Maria Miller has done what she's always done—show up, work hard and take pride in a job well done. 

She serves as a custodian at Atlanta Elementary School, where she helps care for the campus and the people inside it. While much of her work happens behind the scenes, Maria takes pride in knowing she's helping create a place where children can learn and teachers can teach.

"I love working here," she said. "It's all I've ever done."

Maria still remembers her first days at Atlanta Elementary School, working alongside longtime custodian Mary Johnson, who helped her learn the job.

"When I first came to AES, I was working with Ms. Mary," she said. "She made my job easy. We had fun."

Three decades later, it's the people who have kept her here.

"It's peaceful over here, and everyone gets along," Maria said. "I like to come to work, do my job and go home."

For Maria, that simple routine has become something much deeper.

"This is where I belong because everyone is like family," she said. "Everybody understands each other. It's hard to explain."

What matters most to her isn't recognition. It's knowing she has done her work well.

"I like knowing that I did my job the way it's supposed to be done," she said. "It makes me feel good knowing that I come in here and do the best that I can do."

Students may never know everything that goes into preparing their school each day. They may not notice the small details that help their campus feel welcoming.

But those things don't happen by accident.

They happen because of people like Maria, whose commitment has helped make Atlanta Elementary feel like home for generations of Rabbits.
