McCord named next principal of Atlanta High School

Atlanta ISD is proud to announce that Dena McCord has been selected as the next principal of Atlanta High School, effective June 2026.
For the past eight years, she has served as principal of Atlanta Elementary School, focusing on student success and school culture. With 33 years in education, including 14 years in Atlanta ISD, she brings proven leadership and a strong connection to the Atlanta community to her new role.
McCord has also served as assistant principal and interventionist at Atlanta High School. Before joining Atlanta ISD, she worked in McLeod ISD. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University–College Station and a master’s degree from Texas A&M University–Texarkana. She is a 1988 graduate of Atlanta High School.
During her tenure at Atlanta Elementary School, McCord is most proud of how the staff has created a place where high expectations are coupled with a love of learning and a sense of belonging. Under her leadership, AES earned recognition as a 2021 Blue Ribbon School and implemented the Ron Clark House System to strengthen relationships, character, and school spirit.
"What I will miss most about Atlanta Elementary School is spending my days with the incredible people who show up for kids every single day,” McCord said. “I strongly believe that Atlanta Elementary School is the best elementary school this side of heaven because of them and their hearts for kids.”
McCord said she is honored to return to Atlanta High School and is committed to upholding its tradition of excellence.
“Atlanta High School is a positive place with a strong tradition of being competitive academically and athletically,” McCord said. “I’m excited to be part of that team and to build on the excellence already in place by supporting students, partnering with staff, and keeping our community proud of what happens inside our school every day.”
McCord’s leadership has been recognized with honors such as the 2019 TASSP Region 8 High School Assistant Principal of the Year and the 2018 Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year.
Superintendent Jason Harris described McCord as a proven leader who understands Atlanta’s students and community.
“Mrs. McCord brings experience, a strong track record of building positive school culture, and a commitment to excellence that aligns perfectly with the traditions of Atlanta High School,” Harris said. “Her heart for students, her credibility with staff, and her pride in this community will serve our high school families well.”
McCord will remain in her current role at Atlanta Elementary School through the end of the school year, with the transition to Atlanta High School taking place in June.
