Fitness assessments are required by law for all students in grades 3 through 12.
Texas Educational Agency has identified Fitnessgram® as the fitness assessment tool to be used by all school districts in the state.
Fitnessgram® scores are evaluated against objective criterion-based standards called Health Fitness Zones (HFZs). Researched-based HFZ standards include specific standards for aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. These standards reflect reasonable levels of fitness that can be attained by most children that participate regularly in various types of physical activity.
The use of health-related criteria helps minimize comparisons between children and emphasize personal fitness. Since modest amounts of exercise are needed to obtain health benefits, most students who participate in physical activity almost every day will be able to achieve a score that will place them in a Healthy Fitness Zone.
